I don't think that most American's will really realize the impact of what we are going through until they see their neighbors with a uhaul outside the house because they got laid off or lost their home. This is going to be much more widespread than what we saw in the 80's where only a few developers and risk takers went broke. This one is going to be felt by everyone.
And the saddest part of the deal, is the bankers that created most of it, are the only ones that have been given any money to bail "us" out.

This will go down as the biggest travesty of justice when the banks that played games with people mortgages stand by and watch as people lose their homes and jobs.I read the guy at Merrill Lynch spent a million on renovating his office last year and citibank was still trying to buy a 40 million dollar jet last week.They don't get it because they never actually worked for the money that comes in any way and the government bailed them out when they shit the bed.Its a shame they don't take the brunt of this.

I'd say that my job is relatively secure, but our CFO was here this week and he intimated that he'd like me to move to our headquarters in D.C. I love Chicago and until recently I would have turned him down flat, but now I'd have to think about it.

Well, anything that is done to bolster the economy needs to be done so that it keeps money "in our" economy. Giving money to people to be spent at Walmart isn't going to do anything but bolster the Chinese and Taiwan economies.
I think that giving people money right now, won't accomplish what they want to accomplish. They will just take that money and go out and buy a cheap tv, video game, clothes at Walmart, etc. And that won't help our economy. That will only help the Chinese or the other countries that manufacture those cheap things.
Money needs to go to our infrastructure. Like Bird said, we haven't seen a huge monetary committment to our infrastructure in decades. Bridges need to be rebuilt, interestate highways are way over due for reconstruction. New roads need to be built. Levees need to be improved. Its a win-win that is a shame that we have been forced into.

What did those extra checks we got during the Bush years do for the economy anyway?Nothing.You're right that all the money would go to china in the form of selling goods.
Unfortunately this is going to be far worse than an extra $800 a person can fix.Like soup kitchen for people who were making 50 g's bad.
I keep reading about people making anywhere from 50 to 80 K a year who just can't find any job right now let alone one that pays what they were making.One guy was a diner manager making 60 K(I was shocked at this) who is now delivering pizzas.

I know of 5 already from around my industry and this morning I heard of another 20 from one company and I know at least 10 personally.What a depressing time for business in general.I've never experienced anything like this.

Is there a chance, sure. Is it likely? no. I'm kind of a big deal (just kidding). We'll end up benefiting from what's going on right now. The fact that Obama wants to overhaul the nations infastructure makes this an imporant time for our company.

It seems like in my industry people are banking on the stimulus to get things kicking again but in the time between now and then they are laying people off in droves because there is no time table and nobody wants to pay benefits for people just sitting on their ass.
I've been to some places where they laid off the secretary and all but two people to work at the whole store.They've got these guys running around like mad but they arent complaining its so bad out there.
Some corporations I deal with are not hurting as bad as it seems and are using this recession to get rid of some dead weight.

I'm pretty chummy with the CEO of the company. During our year end reviews he uses the time to pat me on the ass and tell me good game then b.s's with me for an hour. He told me that was his plans if the board approves, to get rid of some dead weight. He told me he had a list of 2 to 3 guys per department that he plans on cutting. He asked me some guys in our department I think don't cut it and he pretty much concured with me. I told him it means I have to run around here like a chicken with its head cut off I'm cool with it.
It's definately scary. I'm more worried about my wife. She's an office manager for a high scale hotel.

I think the new thing for all companies during this down time will be doing more with less.One manufacturer I deal with had this guy who was basically head of 3 or 4 factories that they were trying to combine to make 2 factories out of a competitor they bought.Anyway he's head guy and really sharp, making over 150 g's.They waited until he had everything to do with the factories logistics set up and laid him off.How the fuck do you go to the unemployment office after making that much?
In a way I agree that some places have the work of 1 person being done by 3, I'm doing the work of 4 people at my place with all my responsibilities so I'm used to it.Its just a cold hard reality thats going to lead to a large amount of unemployed.

What sucks for my wife's place is 75% of her customers are guys in town Monday thru Thursday with the aircraft companies, Cessna, Beechcraft, Boeing, Spirit, Etc. Those guys are making huge cuts. My wife did say they're still doing really well during the week, but their weekends have been trickling down. They also do coorporate functions, weddings, proms, etc. That whole season is coming up so they'll still have money coming in. She's pretty lucky in that she basicly runs the whole hotel. The manager is rarely in the office and her boss knows it. They'd probably cut the hotel manager and move my wife up.
