Who's cooking their own turkey this year and how do you cook it?
Our family requires 2 turkey's and we bring the second. My uncle smokes one in one of those water smokers. He always brings the "primary" turkey. My wife and I bring turkey #2 because we always used to run out.
We brine it for a day or so and then she rubs some kind of butter/herb mix under the skin all over the bird. Then cook in the oven. The brine really makes it moist. We usually get one of those little pop out thermometers to jab in it (if the bird doesn't come with one). That tells you exactly when they are done.
Nothing better than leftover turkey sandwiches.

Flumps, do you buy the Shelton turkeys or some otherwise 'fresh' brand? They cost more but it's worth it.
My bro-in-law sometimes rotisserie's a turkey and bastes it with a honey glaze. It's awesome. Last year I brined a bird and it was incredibly moist and tender.

I deep fry a turkey every year at Christmas at the inlaws. Her dad loves to fry the turkeys. They are $$$, but I hate the mess. They live in the country, so its no big deal, but where I live, having five gallons of used oil to get rid of is not something easy to do.
The grease splatters, so you can't cook one on a patio that you care about grease stains.

I don't usually do the turkey purchase, so not sure. Never heard of Shelton turkey. I'll ask tonight.
I know that we are probably going to buy it in the next few days because it takes 4 or 5 days to thaw in the frig.

ahha.....here's a $$$$ way that I used to use...although it's cheating.
you're surrounded by pit bbq joints....the one close to my house when I lived in florida used to roast mine for 12 bucks...it was a two day process and was probly the bestest turkey I've ever had.

A fresh turkey must be ordered ahead, but any butcher can get you one. With fresh, there's no thawing in the fridge crap. I hate that.

Yeah, the bbq places around here will do the same thing. I don't know what they charge.
I have a large smoker on a trailer and thought about cooking one. I might buy an extra to smoke just to see how it would turn out. I assume you need to put a pan of water in the smoker to keep the moisture up.
The turkeys are so cheap this time of year, you can buy them just to fuck around with experimenting new ways to cook.

Google it to get the exact instructions. Basically it means that you soak it in really really salty water. Somehow, soaking in the salt water makes it really moist. It really makes a difference. I highly recommend it.

yeah in that big of a smoker you'll want alot of water....try cutting up some oranges and put them in the water....not too many though...adds a different flavor to the turkey....this time of year I buy the slabs of turkey breast that the butcher sells for dumbasses that don't know how to cook, and freeze them till spring then cook them on the open pit in an all day affair around easter.

I'm a big fan of the fried turkey. Rub it, inject it with white cooking wine and butter, drop it in the oil. I take the used oil out back and dump it on the fire. The kids get a big kick out of it.

Son-of-a-bitch, I found a store in my little town that sells those birds. Its a health food place (Abundant Life Health Foods).
cLaY, is it gay to buy a turkey in a health food place?
