Raiden - anyone, pool filter question - trouble - 09-06-2006
We have a 21 ft 48" above ground pool. Our jacuzzi pump w/cartridge filter died.
What is better filter for this size pool:
Same type, d/e or sand?
Also for replacement pump Jacuzzi or Hayward or ????

DE filters clean the best but are the most maintenance, especially if you have water problems or need to replace parts. Cartridge filters are good because there arn't too many parts on them and easy to take out and hose off but are expensive to replace. Sand filters are very low maintenance and only require changing the sand. Some parts to replace down the road.
As far as pump brands, they are all the same basically.

This is all essentially true, but a bit outdated. Props to you, Pongers.
Sand filters are easy maintenance, as they only require backwashing about every 2-4 weeks. Backwashing a sand filter could be done in your church clothes, but it does waste a few hundred gallons of water.
Using zeolite instead of sand in a sand filter increases filtration effectiveness, capturing particles down to around 3 microns, as opposed to 5 for DE, 20 for cartridge, and 40 for sand. Giardia is like 8 or 10 microns, IIRC.
So, it sounds like it's just your pump that died? Ehnco could replace the motor and shaft seal on it. Or you could get a new pump and use the same filter. Or you could update the entire system with an energy-conserving 2-speed pump and a phat sand filter with Zeobrite.
As I mentioned in your repost at Ownster, the pool industry is very much in the stone ages and opinions/experience/education vary widely. I am, however, on the extreme in my opinions of how to design & build the perfect pool. In other words, my shit it fucking $$$$! And I do get four dollar signs, with a 5th on Feb. 29th, bitches.
Also, excavation starts Monday on a $400K project with 2 pools, a spa, and 3 fountains.
