David Beckham was a good soccer player but not that good ... I mean he's prolly a retired soccer player.
And and doesn't have that huge aura that has Pele, Maradona (who once scored with his hand and said later that it was god's hand and not his one...I mean you have to get balls to do that during a World Cup)

He's big for american soccer.We just don't have world famous soccer players playing in the states.I think he sold out some away games even when he was sitting on the bench hurt.He's probably more famous here because of his wife and he fits in with the whole hollywood lifestyle.Philadelphia is supposed to get a soccer team in a year or so, we are building a stadium now.I will go to the games when Beckham comes not just for his penis.

yeah he isn't a forward or stryker so he doesn't score all that much. he is pretty much a glorified defender thats past his prime. I have watched many a soccer game.

well true that he's nice for american soccer, because honestly before him I had never heard of the LA Galaxys soccer team, and that's a shame because it's clear that you have the potential to have 2 or 3 world class players counting all the leagues that are developing and so on (but a world class player starts playing when he's very young and never stops...)

well you know a soccer game runs for 90 minutes, two times 45 minutes not counting the added time (count at least 2 to 5 minutes per game at the end of the 90 minutes) and that without counting the eventual extra time. Take an example of a game that can't finish on a draw there will be prolly one or two supplementary 15 minutes ...and well there could be a golden goalie too...like err rules aren't always applicable to every level of play but I'm going away in technicalities here.
Now considering that a soccer field is quite huge (don't think the indoor fields because they are way smaller) a player who runs non-stop during 90 minutes (and is never exhausted) just doesn't exist (or the dude runs on amphetamines and he's going to die three month after his first game).
a soccer game is a collective game, a goal is made because the whole team collaborated, the games where a "single player" outruns all the field then scores...well only exists or kids plays
(even not anymore on amateurs leagues who plays like woodchuckers)

I until Philly gets a team am a Galaxy fan basically because the get the most exposure so I can watch some games on espn and they have a few irish guys.Beckham will raise the level of play in the US.Not so much by his play but bringing more attention which equals more money for salaries which brings in better foreign talent.If the US professional teams are at a high level our homegrown players will grow up in that high class enviroment.The US will win the world cup in the next 20 years.
