Who is a typical idiot american who thinks everything outside his county is a foreign country.

Also I'm kind of shocked that a country that had two nukes dropped on it embraced nuclear energy so easily.

8 since I admired your calm during the gulf oil spill I was wondering when is the appropriate time or has it passed already for Japan to nuke their Nuclear facility to take care of that problem? Also why hasnt Obama been to Japan yet?

Japan is fucked. Keep in mind the BP disaster was the worst case scenario for oil production... whats going on in Japan is the worst case scenario for nuclear power.

Which would you prefer?

hey lee, don't forget to let us know if the sky gets a lovely glow when those reactor - BIRD33 - 03-15-2011

I love it!Well geez I guess I'm ok with poisoning a ecosystem a certain way now!Puts it all in perspective, thanks.

BP was not the worst case for oil.Hundreds of thousands dead fighting over a region with oil is the worst case which if you havent been paying attention has kind of been unfolding over the last decade.

Japan is fucked. Why they put a reactor right on the coast of the pacific ocean where the word tsunami was invented makes little sense.

Honestly with all things considered I prefer nuclear to oil in the long run.Everyone can access nuclear power not just cartels who sell it to the rest of us.I live 40 minutes from 3 mile island so its not like I'm unaware of the ramifications. What would have been the difference if Obama didnt step in and plug that well and that fucker was still leaking into the gulf?Same ecological disaster proportions.

Here's an unfortunately timed but interesting none the less article from just a month ago.

Can nuclear power save Japan from peak oil?

Uhhh...No.

No way we build any nuclear reactors here. Never gonna happen again. If we have hit peak all we will have to take a step back technology wise. No way we can keep up our luxuries without oil or nuclear power.

I think we both agree oil is not going to last forever.Nuclear power has only been viable for what 50-60 years? Its in its infancy really.I see major rethinking on how to build them safely and some plants are located in terrible areas that might need to be closed but its not going away.

hey lee, don't forget to let us know if the sky gets a lovely glow when those reactor - Anhil8tor - 03-15-2011

No oil will not last forever. However, when that reactor exploded leaking radiation in the food and water supply... it sealed the fate of nuclear power. In the eyes of the public, nuclear power is no longer safe. This will force us and other countries to be more reliant on fossil fuels: coal, oil and natural gas.

Was is smart for Japan to build a nuclear reactor on a fault line? No.... but when a country has no primary energy supplies.. it has to do something. Japan got over 30% of their total energy from nuclear resources. They built 4 nuclear reactors on the coast.. don't you think they are pumping sea water into those reactors to cool them off? Where do you think the radiation is draining into? Is Japans government there making sure none of this will affect any other countries?

The first thing that we learn is that steel and concrete cannot contain a nuclear explosion. Do you think they though of that when they built these things on a coastline, on a fault line, right where a tsunami would hit? This is the worse civil nuclear accident in history. Germany canceled all licensing extensions on their aging plants already.

So we won't use nuclear power.... what are our other options to make energy for entire countries?

this will have little bearing on our nuclear power production. new plants will be built, just alittle better in order to handle seismic activity greater than 7.3.

Good info on how to stop using oil bird.. .but look at this:

The United States, with five percent of the world’s population, uses about 25% of the world’s 85 million barrels of oil production per day, or 31 billion barrels per year. This causes some countries (like China with 1.7 billion people and India with 1.1 billion people) to dislike us very much because they use only a fraction of what we use per capita.

Disagree with you in the eyes of the public comment. Why didnt this apply to offshore drilling when the gulf crisis was happening?Food and water was tainted by oil but yet the public got over BP being allowed to drill again. Now this disaster has the potential to be worse for sure but #1 it didnt happen here so as you know if most yokel americans don't see it with their own eye's they don't believe it(see global warming). To say it "sealed the fate" reads like its straight out of one of your trade magazines and is just wishful thinking on the oil communities part.

I'm not worried about radiation tainting the ocean. Its pretty big, dude. They test nuclear bombs at sea for christ sake.

You are confusing what happened here. The nuclear plant withstood the earthquake. It was the flooding caused by the tsunami that took out the generators and backups that caused this. They don't get flooded we don't have this disaster.

Like I said we need to reevaluate where its safe to put a plant and some probably need to close and I know this is frightening to hear but nuclear power and other alternatives to oil are the future.

Do you really think the average indian or chinaperson dislikes us because of how much oil we use?

Gulf seafood is more tested than anything else you eat.... it shows no ill effects. How ironic is it that Louisianas governor killed more oysters with fresh water intrusion that the oil spill did.

Can anyone explain why we were getting milk and vegetables from Japan?
