There is a fascinating argument out there in a book called the evolution of god where the author makes the claim that Paul made up most of the things jesus said like love thy neighbor in the later gospels.He has a theory that the book of Mark is the closest to thing we have to an accurate portrayal of jesus because it was written so close to his death compared to the other gospels being 100 years later.If you look at the book of mark jesus only says the word "love" once or twice compared to 40 to 50 times in each of the other books and is pretty harsh to non jews and is missing things like the beatitudes and the sermon on the mount so it kind of makes you wonder if the version of jesus we are taught is really legit.Paul changed jesus's message in order to enable the spread of the church to different ethnicitys to make it seem like jesus was this all accepting god.

I tried to explain this to a friend who turned into a born again wacko and at first he totally denied that jesus only says love twice in the book of Mark.I told him to check it out and I could tell he was a little unsettled by it and then spun it in a way that his small minded brain could deal with it.No shocker really but it was fun to see his hardened beliefs kind of crumble for a minute.
