How much real authority does the british government have over Canada?I find it kind of disturbing they still have a minor say.Has there ever been a movement to remove that type of decision making from the queen since its kind of ridiculous to have a monarch calling the shots in a 1st world country now a days?

The monarch actually has zero say. I'm not sure why we still have to act like there is a tie, because there isn't. The Queen is on our money, that's about the only tie that remains.

The GG pretty much has to do whatever the Prime Minister requests. To do otherwise would go directly against the Canadian people who voted his party to form government. If the government falls on the budget bill (confidence vote) then we must have an election. Mondays vote was not an official budget meaning the coalitions desire to vote non-confidence in the gov't even after they made concessions (worked with other parties) was only a desperate power grab. That's why government was suspended. They will not be able to do this in January when the budget is tabled. If this unholy alliance is still determined to unseat the gov't then we have an election.
Whoopee.

Well happens every year in Italy, they can't form coalitions strong enough who can unify behind the budget so basically there's a new coalition every damned year.
Italy is the only country where the news on TV consists of 50 minutes of politics, 8 of international news and 1 on cooking and 1 on some chick.

Canada is a very fractured country from what I can tell with all the different political groups with no hope of unity under one or even two strong partys.
The Queen appoints the GG on the advice of the PM. The GG would have followed the PM's request. She has to, as the PM is the democratically elected decision-maker. This shows how little influence the monarch actually maintains over these events. The Queen has never come to address the nation over any crisis that we have had in my memory.
In the past, Canada actually used to have a pretty solid Liberal majority, until Jean Chretien fucked it all up.

The queen could appoint whomever she wanted, right? And they could do whatever they want without obligation to do what the PM says?Theres no movement to change this?Seems archaic.

No, did you not read what I posted? The GG is appointed by the Queen on the recommendation of the Prime Minister. And the GG has never, in the history of Parliament, gone against the wishes of the Pm. Why change something that isn't broken? :S The GG is a crap role, it means nothing, like Pickle posted. The only role of the GG is to pretend the monarch still has a role, but nothing ever comes of it that isn't what the PM wants and asks for.

Lets go over the word Recommendation in our minds.Ok now that we did that can we agree that the GG theoretically could go against the wishes of the PM?Say you had a closeted evil PM and he proposed something that was ridiculous.Wouldnt it be the job of the GG to go against his wishes if thats what the queen wanted?I agree you don't change something that isnt broke but it seems to me you are still leaving a small amount of authority in the hands of a separate nation. It would unnerve me if that was the case here.
I suppose if that ever happened, there would be a motivation to change it. Since it never has, no one cares. You have to understand something about Canadian politics: no one cares. Only since this happened have people even bothered to voice an opinion. The last election had the loweest voter turnout in history. People are fantastically apathetic.

American elections get 95% more coverage here than our own do.
I'm not really sure why we even have elections, no one ever does anything once they get elected anyways.
The coalition is going to fall apart. The liberals are already fighting amongst themselves.
