2-Run Single by Mastin in 9th Gives Bentley 5-4 Win over Saint Rose
#1

WALTHAM, Mass. - Junior third baseman Chad Mastin (Newmarket, N.H./Newmarket HS) lined a two-run single to left, capping a three-run ninth, to give Bentley College a come-from-behind 5-4 win over the College of Saint Rose in Northeast-10 Conference baseball Tuesday afternoon at DeFelice Field. The win in the regular season finale lifted the Falcons into a three-way tie for sixth place in the conference, with Saint Rose and Saint Anselm, each finishing at 15-15 in the NE-10. However, due to what appears to be a one-year change in the conference tiebreaker system, Bentley (18-24 overall after winning six of its final eight) will apparently not make the NE-10 playoffs, despite having a better record in head-to-head competition amongst the three teams.

With Bentley down 4-2 after Saint Rose scored twice in the top of the ninth, junior centerfielder Bob Savoy (Norwell/Norwell HS) led off the bottom of the final inning with a single up the middle. Sophomore second baseman Tim Denehy (Norwood/Norwood HS) drew a walk, and after a strikeout, the two base runners were successful on a double steal, putting runners on second and third.

Sophomore shortstop Steve Gath (Reading/Reading HS) grounded to shortstop, but as the result of a throwing error, Savoy scored the third run, and Bentley again had two runners in scoring position. Following a pitching change and an intentional walk, Mastin lined an 0-2 pitch to left with Denehy scoring the tying run and Gath racing home for the winning tally.

In the top of the ninth, the Golden Knights had broken a 2-2 tie on an RBI single by junior leftfielder John Marcella (Schenectady, N.Y.). Saint Rose added another run when Marcella was caught in a rundown attempting to steal, but before he was tagged out, sophomore third baseman Kyle Babie (Loudonville, N.Y.) was able to score from third.

St. Rose, which finished its season at 24-25 overall, struck first with Babie scoring in the second. He doubled, took third on a ground out and scored on an infield single by junior catcher Freddie Harris (Schenectady, N.Y.).

Bentley came back with two in the bottom of the second. Sophomore catcher Mike O'Connor (Wilbraham/Minnechaug Reg. HS) had an RBI single and scored when a pop-up to first with two out fell in for an error.

St. Rose evened the game at 2-2 in the sixth on a triple by senior rightfielder Anthony DiTroia (Schenectady, N.Y.) and an RBI double by senior first baseman David Stringham (Schenectady, N.Y.).

Freshman righty Chris Dupay (Scotia, N.Y./Burnt Hills-BallstonLakeHS) went the distance for his fifth win of the season. He allowed seven hits and two walks while striking out four.

Senior leftfielder Tim Bryant (Reading/Reading HS) had two hits for Bentley in his final collegiate game, and also made a diving catch in the eighth. Stringham was three-for-four for Saint Rose.

No, college. I went to Bentley College.

For whatever reason, in these articles, when a player's name is listed, they put his town/high school in parenthesis.
