Two problems.
1. I think that the school's terms for the laptops said that the webcam would only be used for lost/stolen. I don't know this for a fact, but based on the wording in a lot of the articles it seems that was supposed to be the case.
2. The school punished a kid for something he did at home. I don't care if they had a right to turn on the camera, let's put that aside. Does the school have a right to punish your kid for something the kid did in your house?

Sounds like they didn't disclose that they had this ability or could use it. If they didn't put it in the terms for the laptops then they really had no right.
