like bittorrent a really clever system originally created by the open source community (mostly linux stuff ok) to spread the software and other ISO (image cd's of linux distributions, for example, in their case). The advantages is that you can download at lightning speed in almost no time.
That speed is achieved because everyone who downloads becomes a "seeder" too, so you serve a little bit too. A seed with 100+ people on it is so fast that you can download something like 3 gigs in a few hours (at the limit of your capacity let's be clear).

Seriously while finding a good FTP server to download your latests packages at the maximum speed of your internet connection could be a pain (especially if you use some obscure system) with bittorent you get your stuff in no time.

Now it's like a car, could be used to transport toys for the orphans or C for the junkies. same medium different content
