I have never heard anyone say that they were glad to have a time share within a few years after they got it.

Parent's had one in New Braunfels. Siad they will never do it again and I could see why. It seemed every time it was our turn to go during the year we were always getting bumped a week or when we would show up the place would be filthy from poor cleaning from the tenants before.

Moms & Pops bought one about 5 years ago. They only got to travel once, and now pops doesn't even use it anymore but he still pays the $500+ "maintenance fee" per year. He wanted to sell it, but since my parents were going to leave it to me and the sis after they're gone, I told him I'd pay the maintenance fee per year if he let me do the traveling since I'd like to keep it in the family for inheritance purposes.

I'm looking for a fair way to let pops benefit from it since he shelled out the loot in the first place, but I don't want to pay the maintenance fee and then have to drag him whereever I go. Any suggestions?

I have one. Every other year, one week on Maui.
I had severe buyers remorse until I went for the first time. Awesome.
Been back 3 times total, and planning to go in October.
I am not in a program or swapping club. I bought Maui, I want Maui.

After about 5 or 6 times, you are paid off and "making" money off your vacations. It's a long term plan. I recommend it, but I'm an idiot.

I'd get 1 week per year at Grand Geneva. 45 minutes from my house. I'd be able to swap--something I'd be interested in--but I don't know much about it and was looking for some tips from you idiots.

The sales techniques used to sell the things are very intense. They convince you that you are going to travel and do all of these things that you should be doing, deserve to be doing, blah blah blah, and by the time they stop telling you about what a no lose investment this is, you are ready to sign. But, most people that didn't travel in the first place, are not going to travel now either.

If you want the time share from your parents, just take the $500 and pay it yourself and use it yourself. They would probably just be thrilled that someone was using it and paying for it.

That's what I want to do, but I think pops would want the ability to use it too if the situation arises. A good solution for this would be to split the yearly maintenance costs (and vacation time), but since I'd probably want to swap to a different location ie Vegas or CA ('sup Blueeyedwoman), I'd hate to lose 1/2 week of vacation time to him.

I'm looking for a win/win solution that gets me the week and doesn't make him feel like he's getting shafted out of potential vacation time.

Back in Carolina, my buddy Mike's folks had a sweet one in Atlantic Beach. They let us borrow it for a weekend. It was totally sweet! We sat out on the deck whistlin' at the ladies as they walked by. A few showed some interest and would walk up a gab for a while. So we started telling them that we were having an after bar party later that night. Around 8 we went clubbing and brought some girls back around 2 or so. We get there and Mike sister was crashed out in what was supposed to be my room. She woke up and immediately started bitchin'. The constant stream of folks showing up of the after bar didn't help. She picked up the phone to call her folks to rat us out, that turned into a fight resulting in a trip to Walmart the next moring to replace the phone. So, we decide to kick everyone out and just crash. The chick I had already spent way to much time coaxing to the room wanted to bail, so I just let her go. As we start to settle in Mike's sister's roommate wakes up. She comes out in this tiny robe (I was soooooo stoked, thinking she's better than the one that just left). We all sat around drinking for a while. Mike was being a fukkin' puss of a wingman and not letting me have the hottie. So, I banged his sister. No anal stuff, she was a total first night prude.

Yeah, I say go for it.

Just tell him that you want to take the thing over. He will be thrilled that his investment is not going to waste. You making a big deal about it will be more than he ever thought he would get out of it. Now, also tell him that any time he wants to use it, just to let you know and you will make arrangements. Of course, he never will since he hasn't done it in the past 5 years, but you made the offer. If he does ask you for a week or so, then see if you can trade for it. If you can't, just tell him that there aren't any weeks left.

A lot of people that buy these (my wife's parents did it), really beat themselves up for the poor decision that they made. At the time they buy them, they think that it will be great for them and an investment for the kids. When they find that they don't like going or don't use it, then they feel like they fucked up. If you take it away from your dad, my money would be that he will thank you for it.

Note: There is no tactful was to ask for something that will be willed to you prior to that person's death.

My brother has 3 and loves them. My boss has 2 and feels the same way. If you are the type of person who works way too much, and refuses to let money slip away, buying one will be the best excuse you will ever have to force yourself to vacation.

I know what you're thinking now. You think we're all gay, don't you? Think we're all just a bunch of deviant lifestyle-living same-sex having motherfuckers, am I right?
