What am I missing on Obama's Salary Freeze
#1

Obama announced that he is freezing top level salaries in financial institutions that received government bailout money. He is freezing the salaries at no more than $500,000 per year? $500,000 per year?

That is twice what he said during his campaign constituted a business that would not be considered a "small business".

In other words, if some guy that owns a dry cleaner makes more than $250,000 per year, then Obama considers him a large business owner and he should be taxed more than he is now.

But, a single executive of a large bank can make twice that much money and that is some kind of punishment?

They'll just vote themselves big bonuses instead. Or stock options. Or something.

nobody was on here cursing Bush for being inactive over fixing this financial mess...but now that Obama is actually doing something about it everyone seems to be telling him what a bad job he's doing.

Bush sat on the sideline the last few months while the economy collapsed and basically adopted socialism but we didnt here a peep out of anyone.

You are meshing two issues that have nothing to do with each other.

Do you have a problem with Obama capping salaries for corporations who took bailout money?Yes or no.

What Obama considers a large business has nothing to do with this and comparing a drycleaner to Merrill Lynch is stupid.

Quote:Under Obama's plan, companies that want to pay their executives more than $500,000 will have to do so through stocks that cannot be sold until the companies pay back the money they borrow from the government.
$500k seems a bit high to me, but it's a good start and seems relatively sound fundamentally.

They're all about finding fault rather than letting the guy do his job.

This is Obama's ugly gift from the last administration: accountability.

it's the platform he ran on and will be a long overdue breath of fresh air if/when he can pull it off.

Its very true but its a good thing.

Would a GOP administration even be capable of considering capping salaries of corporate america? Not likely.

Obama will be picked on because he's basically open about everything unlike the last president. If he followed the lead of GW he would be calling everyone who's against the stimulus "unpatriotic".Does anyone disagree with that?

apples and oranges.

TARP fund receivers and the taxes a small business owner pays are not the same thing.

500,000 = minimumn wage when your a CEO that's accustom to receiving 10 mil+ in bonuses every year

Well, I don't really see it as apples and oranges. My point is that during his campaign obama basically made the decision and ground it into McCain's face that $250,000 is where you draw the line. That is what separates the wealthy from the working class.

So, now he has a chance to put his foot down and stop the greed on wallstreet and what does he do? He redraws this line in the sand and doubles it to $500,000.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for capping those bastards salary. But let's make the punishment fit the crime. If Obama and all of those millions that voted for him, decided during the campaign that $250,000 was the dividing line, then surely those fat cats at Merill Lynch can survive off of that. After all, that is the definition of wealthy....making more than $250,000 per year.

I just want to see him stick a little closer to those ideas that he had when he was campaigning and not see him bow down to the washington establishment that he ran against.
