State police said an SUV driven by E G, 27, of Lafayette was traveling north on the highway when G failed to negotiate a left curve, causing the vehicle to hit a utility pole, a chain link fence and a tree.
A 2-year-old boy, C G, who was riding in the vehicle suffered fatal injuries.
E G has been charged with DWI, careless operation, vehicular homicide and vehicular negligent injuring. She and a 3-year-old girl who also was in the vehicle were transported to Lafayette General with minor to moderate injuries.
E G was booked into the Iberia Parish Correctional Center.
