I heard this on the radio. Some dude in England had been in a terrible motorcycle crash and was in a coma for a long time. I think he was going to be a paraplegic. Years earlier he had seen a family friend being kept alive on life support and told his family he would never want to have to go through that.
Anyway, the family discussed what to do about him in his hospital room and finally decided that they wanted the doctors to pull the plug. So, the doctors agreed.
Then, right before they were going to do it one of the doctors opened up one of his eye lids and started talking to him. explaining what they were about to do. The doctor told him that "if he didn't want them to pull the plug and kill him, he should blink his eye".
And he did. He blinked his eye.
Turns out he was in a coma, but his mind and hearing and all had been perfectly fine the whole time. he just couldn't move or signal anyone in any way.
