A former Edgewood High School teacher fired in 2006 after being accused of violating the district’s morality clause has been officially approved to return to the district effective Jan. 25, according to district officials.

The Edgewood school board voted to reinstate Kevin Johnson during a special meeting on Thursday night, Jan. 14.

Johnson, 45, was a 15-year social studies teacher when the Edgewood school board voted 4-1 in June 2006 to terminate his contract after he was accused by students and parents of reading inappropriate comments in the classroom during an assignment.

Tom York, then Edgewood’s superintendent, claimed Johnson violated the district’s morality clause.

Johnson appealed the decision and, in August 2009, the 12th District Court of Appeals ruled Edgewood City Schools unjustly fired him. After a Jan. 8 hearing, it was agreed that the district would reinstate Johnson.

Johnson’s annual salary will be $58,222, according to Thomas.

Johnson’s firing stemmed from an annual project in his senior sociology class that asked students to speculate on what they see their classmates doing in 20 years.

Students complained that Johnson read aloud responses that predicted students would be a “pole dancer,” “live in a mobile home,” would be “overweight,” and would “sleep with the most random men.”

#1 teachers making that 60 k for teaching half the year is nuts. Some public schools near me the teachers top out at 120 k for high school.

#2 I had a teacher who told this real annoying chick she'd be getting paid by the dollar most likely when she gets older.
