Ubuntu is debian based, (it is an operating system) it comes with everything you need out of the box (openoffice, internet thingies, games, ...).
It has been thought for non techies so there are tons of assistants, guis and stuff.
Ah and you get free updates and no more worries about spywares and viruses...ever.

you can order free cd's (current distro name is : breezy badger).
the boxes come with two cd's : one "live cd" (bootable installs nothing perfect for testing) and one installable one.
The installation is a dream even simplier than a Windoze box setup. basically you put cd, answer two or three questions (keyboard, language...) and it's done.
