Oct. 23 (Bloomberg) -- The Colorado Rockies will resume ticket sales for their World Series home games today after an ``external, malicious attack'' crashed their computer system and forced them to suspend sales.
Fewer than 500 tickets were sold yesterday before the failure of Irvine, California-based Paciolan Inc., which runs online ticket sales for the Rockies and Major League Baseball's Web site.
The Rockies are scheduled to host the Boston Red Sox in the third, fourth and fifth games of the best-of-seven World Series in Denver. The team said it will put tickets on sale today through its Web site beginning at 12 p.m. local time.
Rockies President Keli McGregor called yesterday ``an extremely frustrating day'' for the organization and its fans. ``Our Web site, and ultimately our fans and our organization, were the victim of an external, malicious attack that shut down the system and kept our fans from being able to purchase their World Series tickets,'' McGregor said in a statement.
The National League-champion Rockies are in the World Series for the first time in their 15-year history. An average of 50,358 fans attended Colorado's first three playoff games at Coors Field this postseason.
``We continue to believe that the online sale approach is the most fair and equitable method to distribute the tickets,'' McGregor said. ``Our partners at MLB.com and Paciolan have fully assessed the situation and assured us that (today's) online sale will go as originally planned.''
Colorado has won 21 of its past 22 games, including seven straight in the postseason as it swept both of its playoff series. The Red Sox will host the first two games of the World Series at Boston's Fenway Park tomorrow and Oct. 25.
I suspect it was a Bostonian nerd trying to distract the Rockies players.
