Adam Schefter of NFL Network is reporting that the San Francisco 49ers have hired Mike Martz as their new offensive coordinator.

Martz replaces Jim Hostler, who had one disastrous year as the 49ers' offensive coordinator. Martz spent the last two years as the offensive coordinator in Detroit, and seven years before that in St. Louis, first as offensive coordinator and then as head coach.

Martz will now be tasked with the difficult job of making Alex Smith look like the franchise quarterback the 49ers thought he was when they chose him with the first pick in the 2005 NFL draft. This season Smith was limited by injury to just seven games, and he had a completion percentage of 48.7 percent, with two touchdowns and four interceptions.

This development makes agent Bob LaMont a powerful figure in San Francisco: LaMont represents Martz, head coach Mike Nolan and assistant head coach-defense Mike Singletary.

Singletary won the coaching job yesterday. I hope he and martz can stick together for a couple of years. I think they compliment each other nicely.

Shaun Hill has looked great too! If the 9ers can get Boldin or Housh this year they'll be very very good.

I like Singletary but I wonder if he's all motivation and no coaching itself.The niners are just playing harder than their opponents which is good but I'm not sure about singletarys X's and O's.Herm Edwardsesque like I've been saying.DO you really see Martz being OK with just being a coordinator?If so then it is a good fit but if he wants to be a head coach again I'd watch my back if I was singletery.

I wouldn't be surprised if Singletary kicked the shit out of him if he tried anything. I mean literally laid a parking lot beat down on him.

I think Martz will lay in waiting till a job he wants comes up. I can't see him taking on say the Chiefs job and it will take a couple of years for his reputation to get back to where it should be. I'm guessing Nolan had something to do with the offense because it looks like a completely different system... either that are Martz fucked Nolan which wouldn't suprise me.

I've watched every 9er game this year and the only constant has been bruce at WR. That being said Jason Hill has put together a couple of nice games, Bryant Johnson has been better. Ziegler and VD are playing a WHOLE lot better now.
