I usually hear it straight from the guy who got laid off who then he asks if we are hiring.Makes for painful conversations.

I can't imagine what it is like on the east coast. We're restricted to aircraft companies here that are seeing layoffs, and it just started happening in the past couple of months. It's almost like nobody is safe out there.

I read about the Cessna cuts last week and it doesnt sound good.

The east is slow but not quite dead construction wise.We bid on over a hundred projects last month which is about average.Only thing going on in the field is finish work, not a lot of projects that are not half way completed being worked on.A lot of stuff is just on hold until the lenders arent as nervous.They just put the Revel casino in AC on hold because the banks are nervous that the place will fail.The land cost almost half a billion so I can't see them calling it off but it will take time.The biggest mechanical in S jersey laid off almost 30 guys because of it and thats unheard of for that operation.

The key will be to see if those projects we bid on actually come to fruition or if the shelve them for a better time fiscally.We really arent sure whats going to happen which is why people are hedging their bets by laying off dead weight.


Unless you have a few people below you that do the same thing you arent safe anywhere.

We have probably got 10 or 12 private development "contracts" right now that will never get built. That is what has really fucked up our backlog. Some we were counting on and they have begun to delay them. I don't forsee any of them being built in the near future. The developers, as always, are upbeat and saying "don't worry. its going to happen". But we have taken those jobs off our books and put them in the "slim chance" category. I am basically taking the stance right now, that we are not going to solicit any more private work for the next year and go strictly after public work. The only problem is there is no profit in that work. But I've pretty much given up hope for any profit in 09 and just hope to still be in alive in 2010. I hope those suits in Washington keep dicking around and playing party politics. Its like the whole country has dialed 911 at the same time and the phone lines are down.
